Subletting Laws in Maine

Maine state law does not specifically address your right to sublet, so it's best to take a look at your lease. If your lease does not prohibit subletting, send your landlord a request for approval to sublet. According to the Maine Residential Landlords and Tenant Act, landlords cannot unreasonably refuse a sublet request. Since it is in their best interest to accept a sublet request and they have a duty to mitigate their damages, landlords can only reject your request with a valid reason.
