Does Rental History Show Up on a Credit Report?

Unless you have submitted rent payment history to credit bureaus or have been in housing court your rental history will not show up on a credit report.

No, your full rental history does not show up on a credit report. Landlords and property managers are not classified as creditors and therefore not required to submit previous rent payment data to consumer finance bureaus.

However, there are some credit report products designed for landlords which might include more of your renting data than traditional credit reports. For example, if you have any history of appearance in housing court (even if it was not for an eviction) then this may be pulled by a prospective landlord who you have permitted to run your credit. According to Transunion, landlords can purchase an eviction report in addition to their standard credit report. It will include:

  • Tenant judgements for possession and money
  • Unlawful detainers
  • Tenant judgements for rent
  • Failure to pay rent
  • Writs and warrants of eviction

There is one scenario where your rent payment history will show up on your credit report: if either you or your previous landlord(s) signed up for a service designed to report such payments. These aren't very common and you would likely know about it if your previous rent payments had been reported.

Reporting your rent payments to credit bureaus is a great way to boost your future rental applications. You can ask your current landlord if they are using a similar service and if they aren't you can sign up for one yourself.
